Childbirth Counsellor

Healthworks Practitioner: Tina Megevand

My Background
I began counselling and midwifery in 1989, training as a volunteer ‘Rape Crisis’ counsellor alongside my midwifery training.
Over the years my experience has given me insight into the pain and trauma some women carry.  Often because they don’t have a safe place in which to voice this; sometimes not having the time to be heard or to heal.
These insights prompted me to gain qualification as a Counsellor; my goal was to combine both roles and offer a specific service.  And so in 2002 I began training in the Person-Centred approach, eventually completing an Advanced Diploma in Counselling.
Since 2006 I have been working as a Counsellor for ‘Moray Womens Aid’ (on a voluntary basis) and in 2007 I completed the ‘Specialist Module in Bereavement and Loss’ run by CRUSE Scotland.
Currently I am practising as both part-time Counsellor and part-time Midwife.

Why might you consider ‘Childbirth Counselling’ specifically?
Over the years I have become aware of the hidden distress and pain some women live with.  This may be linked to;
•    Rape or abuse
•    Bereavement and loss: early pregnancy loss, termination, stillbirth, cot-death.
•    Traumatic birth
•    Depression or stress (antenatal or postnatal)
•    Difficulties in transition to parenthood
These events may have been recent or from many years ago.

How may I help you?
I work using the Person-Centred approach (PCA).  This approach focuses on you and your feelings, thoughts and emotions.  In times of distress and pain these can flood in, all jumbled up, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and confused as you struggle to make sense of them.  Through offering you an accepting, non-judgemental space I aim to help you unscramble these thoughts and feelings; ultimately this may enable you to find some peace.

My midwifery background means you won’t have to explain terms or procedures and I may be able to clarify unanswered questions.
